When she wakes up, Livvie Van Lanen has a cup of coffee and a moment to herself. She jots a line in her Gratitude Journal:
“I’m grateful for my family, my health, my friends (be someone’s sunshine today).”
After Livvie’s half-hour of peace, she plunges into the whirlwind of her Summer Term schedule.
Livvie is a Green Bay native who transferred to the University of Wisconsin–Madison last fall to study communications. For her first summer in Madison, she’s enrolled in three Summer Term courses to stay on track for graduating on time—two online and one face-to-face. That would be challenging enough for any rising senior, but Livvie also works as an intern for the Transfer Transition Program.
And serves as editor in chief of the UW fashion publication ALT Magazine.
And introduces fellow transfer students to UW–Madison in SOAR sessions.
And stays in shape for a world-championship equestrian tournament in August.
And, believe it or not, still makes time to hang out with friends around town and on campus.
Fasten your seatbelt for a day in the life of a Summer Term student.
Livvie’s Summer Term day begins serenely, with coffee, avocado toast, and her Gratitude Journal.
She reports for duty as a marketing intern with the Transfer Transition Program.
For her online course Intercultural Communication and Rhetoric, Livvie can study wherever she chooses. Like a Madison coffee shop…
…or her apartment’s rooftop pool.
Livvie prepares to help fellow transfer students with her SOAR Transfer Team.
She plans for the next edition of ALT Magazine.
And gets in shape for the upcoming equestrian tournament.
After dinner, it’s time to hang out at the Memorial Union Terrace.
Livvie’s BFFs arrive for one of their favorite Terrace events, Open Mic Night.
Enjoying a favorite flavor of Babcock Hall ice cream from the Memorial Union’s Daily Scoop.
And another…
…and another.
The open mic performers play late into the night—a peaceful end to Livvie’s busy Summer Term day.
