Imaging Self is a program to learn about yourself through artistic expression, work with practicing artists and faculty, and get to know UW-Madison. You will earn two college credits as you explore how you see yourself and how others see you, using different art forms and mediums to ask and answer questions, solve problems, and present your ideas.
Who it’s for
This program is open to high school juniors and seniors of all skill and experience levels. The main requirement is an interest in art and self-expression. To apply, you must be a junior or senior in the fall of 2019 and have a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
What you will experience
You will enroll in Integrated Arts 330 and select one of three tracks: visual art, dance, or theatre. During the program, you will live in Leopold Hall, located on campus, along the shore of Lake Mendota. A fellow program participant will be your roommate. Mornings will be spent immersing yourself in the artistic discipline of your choice while working in small groups to improve your craft and develop a strong portfolio. In the afternoon, you will work in larger groups where you will practice combining different artistic mediums. In the process, you will build your knowledge about art as an academic pursuit and a reflection of society. Plus, earn college credit and gain experience with artistic disciplines you might like to study in college.
An important part of the program is working with practicing artists such as dancers, actors, stage technicians, and visual artists to explore and express your concept of self. You will examine the choices you make in representing yourself and how different artistic mediums can illuminate these choices. You will also analyze the ways different art forms-and your daily life-illustrate principles of design, become familiar with the college application process and learn about writing an effective college essay.

You will live in Leopold Hall, located on campus, along the shore of Lake Mendota. A fellow program participant will be your roommate. Rooms are fully furnished and include sheets, pillows, and towels.
Move-in is Sunday, July 7. It will include an orientation session for you and your parents, a tour of the Lakeshore neighborhood, and a welcome dinner.
All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are included in the program cost. The first meal will be dinner on move-in day.

Imaging Self is pleased to offer a limited number of students with financial need the opportunity to apply for a scholarship.
To apply for the scholarship, you must:
- Apply to Imaging Self: Precollege Summer Arts Intensive by April 15, 2019.
- Be in good academic standing at your high school with a minimum GPA of 3.00.
- Acknowledgment of financial need.
Apply for the Imaging Self Scholarship by completing the following form. Applications must be submitted by 11:59pm, Monday, April 15, 2019. Scholarship recipients will be notified by April 26, 2019.
Completed applications are evaluated by a scholarship committee based on the above eligibility criteria and essay response.
Meet your instructors
You will work with experienced instructors from UW-Madison’s art, dance, and theatre departments, as well as artists from the community.
Mary Lynn Patterson is a University of Wisconsin-Madison Dance Department B.F.A. graduate and holds a Master of Arts in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling from Drexel University. She is a practicing dance/movement therapist, educator, and dance artist. As a dance artist, she has performed across the country and internationally on stages ranging from the Kennedy Center to Madison Square Garden. In the fall of 2017 Mary returned to the Madison are as a dance/movement therapist and to UW-Madison as an outreach specialist for Performing Ourselves. Through Performing Ourselves she is supervising student teachers, organizing programming, and running school dance residencies for elementary and middle-school children across the city of Madison.
Born and raised in Madison, WI, Lesley is grateful to have received a nurturing art education throughout her youth. In high school, she attended a pre-college summer program at MIAD which introduced her to printmaking, which she carries a passion for to this day. After graduating from West High School, she attended New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a focus on community engagement through the arts, studied screen printing at the Lower East Side Printshop, pursued a yoga teacher training certification, and spent several years in Asheville, NC engaged with community arts initiatives and as an apprentice at Blue Barnhouse Letterpress. In 2010, she returned to Madison to complete her undergraduate degree in K-12 Art Education at UW-Madison. Since then, she has taught art to all ages at various non-profits and screen printing for adults at The Center for Printing Arts at Madison College. She has also worked as a freelance illustrator and artist, shown work in group and solo shows throughout the country and completed a two-month artist residency at The Bubbler at Madison Public Library centered around Henry Miller’s belief that “every day the choice is presented to us, in a thousand different ways, to live up to the spirit which is in us or to deny it.” Currently, she is pursuing her MFA in printmaking at UW-Madison, with an interest in the relationship between artmaking and it’s potential to heal and express care for one other and the natural environment. Born in Pennsylvania and raised all over (including a 5 year stint overseas in Ireland and Malta), Jenny received her BFA from Shenandoah Conservatory and landed in Chicago IL in 1999 and stayed there till 2014. During that time she co-founded Li’l Buds Theatre Company (www.lilbudstheatre.org), a 501c3 children’s theatre company, where she worked as Artistic Director, playwright, director and teaching artist, and she also taught in the Acting Program at The Second City. An accomplished actress, Jenny worked with a variety of theatre companies in Chicago where favorite roles include Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Kate in Taming of the Shrew and Alison et all in Trainspotting USA, and she was named one of 6 performers of note by the Chicago Tribune. Jenny received her MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre from Dell’Arte International and has taught Movement at Monterey Peninsula College. She is currently a Theatre Lecturer at University of Wisconsin-Madison where she teaches Acting and Stage Movement. Recent artistic credits include Movement Coach and Intimacy Design for Six Characters in Search of an Author at UW Theatre, Lin in The Great American Trailer Park Musical with Stages Repertory Theatre, Fraulein Kost in Cabaret with Obsidian Theatre Company and Movement Coach of Oskar VS Thingamabob. www.ripskintinkle.wixsite.com/ jennylamb
